How to wash cashmere by hand

This post is sponsored by Dixon Etiquette.

It’s officially Autumn! You know what that means: sweater weather. I have been wearing my cashmere all year long, because the material is so versatile and perfect for indoor air conditioning temperatures. I like to layer it with winter coats, shirts, and lightweight jackets. I have a video and article coming soon on how to style cashmere coming out soon. Cashmere is one of my favourite materials. It was also my step into luxury materials that are affordable thanks to J.Crew. I buy an endless amount of presents in different styles as blankets, pashmina wraps and sweaters for family and friends.

Why cashmere?

Cashmere is extremely breathable. It moderates your body temperature in the sense that when it’s cold, it keeps you warm, but when it’s hot, you’re not sweating. It is also like silk where it is antibacterial, tending to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria. This fiber falls beautifully and naturally on your shape to flatter your true form when it is worn.

How to hand wash your cashmere

  1. Fill up a closed sink with COLD water.
  2. As the sink is filling up, you can use pre-wash stain remover and an all-fabric gentle brush to scrub the edges of the wrist hem and collar. This is where sweat and makeup build up the most.
  3. When the sink is full, fill up a cap of The Laundress’ Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. There’s an even more affordable wool & cashmere wash from Woolite. My husband has used this for years with all his wool sweaters back in England. I got The Laundress, because I wanted to try it and needed new detergent anyway.

One cap full of The Laundress wool & cashmere shampoo = 16 washes.

Swish the soap in the cap around in the water and disperse it as evenly as you can, so the sweaters can properly get an equal amount of washing solution.

4. Submerge your cashmere garment in the water and squeeze. Avoid wringing the clothing and press instead.

5. Let the garment soak for no more than 30 minutes.

6. Lay a towel down on a flat surface that is easy to clean if it gets wet.

7. Once 30 minutes has passed, lift the cashmere style above the water in the air and squeeze out as much water as you can. This will take a bit of time and elbow grease.

8. Lay it flat on top of the towel.

9. Roll the towel with the cashmere garment inside it and press as you go rolling layer by layer.

10. Reshape and and lay the cashmere item flat to dry for a few hours. I do this overnight.

Tip: Do not hang it on a hanger or dangling from a drying rack. Keep it flat on top of the drying rack wires if you choose to dry it on one.

DO NOT let it dry by a heater or heated area. The cashmere will shrink.
