How to dress formally for indoor winter occasions

A bag is not an accessory. It is an essential.

It’s not utilitarian holding all your things. ‘You put your junk in it and go!’ ‘A bag is an expression of individual iconography.’ Haha quoting The Devil Wears Prada goes over Mr. Dixon’s head, though he is a die-hard style lover himself, but that the expense of English protocol. We Americans have Meryl Streep and….Ana Wintour who is also English. But we claim her because of Vogue! She is NYC-based after all!

The bag is what I did not centre my ensemble around, yet it is not only what finished the outfit, but what made it.

This is because Radley London is my go-to for all things sleek leather, encompassing all events. I dive deep into the structure of this particular bag featured, however this design has been discontinued since 2014. It still is a timeless piece that could have been worn 100 years ago and 100 years into the future, because signature style is forever. You can check out my full Radley London bag review here.

Just as a heads up, I did not bring a coat for this event, because we were insdoors. If you are outdoors, I highly suggest wearing something appropriate as an overcoat.

For the outfit itself:

Opt for something long.

If you do not have a warm long dress in circulation, something fitted past the knees is typically more flattering on the legs. A pencil skirt is always a smart look for any lady in a professional or social setting. I got this gold brocade on black vented midi skirt from Asos about six to seven years ago. Still wearing it today, because it is as timeless as ever, and makes me think of Louis XIV hahaha. It makes me feel ‘fancy’. Hahaha cringe! That word is like cheese grater to my ears.

Cover your arms.

For daytime get-togethers, it is important to cover your arms. In black tie, and other formal evening occasions, it is perfectly admissible in court to wear sleeveless gowns.

Looking modest includes entirely covering your clavicle and decolletage in some cultures and beliefs, but I did not have a boatneck that was not exceedingly casual for this ensemble. This navy cashmere cardigan is so flattering, because of the way it drapes. The fiber kept me warm, and is the only dark sweater I have.

A bodysuit is neater.

I got this Los Angeles Apparel sustainable bodysuit to stop myself from having to constantly go to the bathroom to re-adjust my shirt being tucked in. There is a right way to tuck in your shirt according to Flight Sergeant Dixon (aka my husband who was in the RAF for ten years aka a finishing school for gentlemen). Apparently, I myself have a hard time putting a good shirt and bottoms together. Nothing a little hack like looking seamless in a bodysuit can’t help. Ladies, take notes! Gentlemen, stick to shirt garters.

Embellished pumps make everything look dressed up.

The thing I absolutely love about the right pair of embellished pumps is you can wear them day to night. It is my hack to life that has always worked, lets you spend less on a fantastic pair of shoes, and they are insanely comfortable.

The first time I wore these pumps were walking around in London. Yes, walking around for hours, and my feet didn’t hurt at least until hour five and a half. Pumps – especially satin – with a rhinestone embellishment and not too many sparkly wannabe jewels are perfect for day-to-night when it comes to suiting. They feminise a power suit and make them look even smarter than heeled loafers. You will dominate the world in these heels.

Tights are a must.

Covering your legs is not only to keep warm, but is also proper. It helps either way. In addition, having a longer hem does not guarantee one’s warmth. Tights make you look exceptionally elegant, modest, and ties your ensemble together. They also make your legs look even in complexion and smarter for a daytime get together.

If you plan to wear lighter garments for a regular day to work or simply out being casual, make sure to find some tights that suit your skin tone, or at least are the closest to your lovely shade. I remember I was once asked why I put makeup on my legs as a joke from my dear friend haha. It makes your legs look amazing, more professional and polished.

Keep your makeup natural.

Social events in the day are a time to focus on your company, the gathering itself, and showcasing your character rather than going out all glam. The evening or a proper photoshoot is best to capture your contouring abilities, but a big smile with some lip balm to look put together and moisturised is the way to go.

Keep it simple.

I have some little gold hoops Mr. Dixon gifted to me during one of our first Christmases together. They are so special. Since he knew I always wore tiny $2 Forever 21 hoop earrings, he thought I could have something with a story to pass down. They last forever, and I wear them to bed. Well, I literally remove them, and put them in my pajama pocket to keep them close to my heart.

Having too many accessories, especially with a daytime occasion is highly inappropriate. It also distracts you from being able to move around, getting to know people, and is quite the nuisance. Simply be your wonderful self and be ready to make friends. This is the time to socialise!
