I was worried about wasting money on a cheap pair of trousers that were synthetic, but I was even more worried about saving enough money to put down on stunning land where I will raise my children and the house we build on top of it.
The anxiety and stress immediately melted away one I tried them on, because I am difficult to impress when it comes to factory stitched ‘affordable’ clothes. It is no wonder four pairs of the same trousers in my closet are of the Swedish brand. All with matching suit jackets no less.
Burgundy double pleated trousers? No way. Aubergine? Who would have thought? I find myself wearing these more often than my nearly 90% percent wool trousers that were meant for donning in the snowy Winter of Kentucky. Those were supposed to be my saviour trews as a Los Angeleno ingenue.
They cinch my waist in the ultimately flattering manner I always search for in every pair of trousers. The $900 trousers do not even fit me this way. They hug me just right and make my derrière look like a million Great British pounds. That’s a lot of loot!

For some reason, the length is also something I am finding myself not minding. It is a little bit past my ankles with a definite break (without heels), but are meant to be worn with my work pumps nonetheless. Pairing the ensemble altogether makes each individual item look like they were made for each other from the same mind.

Even when I power clashed with a mint coloured stripe Hawes & Curtis Executive ladies shirt (you can get the Brooks Brothers version here still available), it worked! I felt like the Joker, but an updated, more keen on classic style version. Not exactly the zoot suit oversized power dressing version. This was a different form of power. The power to feel amazing in anything you match with these trousers, because the fit just works that way.
Why do I have so many H&M trousers you ask? All of my starter guide clothes that were off the rack back when I did not have a dime to my name were the perfect base for climbing the work ladder. H&M is one of those stores that has the minimum requirements with maximum effect on propelling you to stand out from your peers. When you know your fit and stick to their cottons — like these amazingly lightweight cotton linen trousers — the world is your oyster.
These will definitely tide me over until I make the big home purchase and then can throw my dream trews together in a bespoke collaboration with one of my favourite suitmakers. Stay tuned for that! I promise it will definitely be in less than a year. Note that it also takes a few months to make. Choosing the materials alone is daunting.
Even after the fact, I will most likely wear these until they are tattered. I hope they last long enough not to rip and make it through any accident, because I will definitely not get tired of these understated statement everyday smart trousers.
