The song above is something I am constantly singing around the house or whistling the tune of while preparing food. I noticed my taste is above and beyond when it comes to jewellery, and people make comments on how striking my pieces are. Quite regularly I am judged on how high maintenance I am simply because of the appearance of my brilliant baubles. However, that is a misguided first impression especially if you have been following me for a while now and know I rarely wear makeup, do my hair, nails, or even jewellery.

Half the time I share my secrets and little magic tricks I figured out on this blog, because I absolutely hate putting effort in without some sort of shortcut. Learning to be productive in when it comes to looking like you put in the time is definitely worth it. Keeping all my tips in your arsenal is something to fall back on when it comes to presenting the most polished version of yourself, because looking good makes you feel good, and that is when you are most productive.

Every time I visit Bergdorf’s in NYC, I see something I absolutely adore and look at the price tag only to find my taste exceeds my wallet haha. Sorry, $640,000 necklace, I cannot add you to my collection of jewels just yet. Though, I do find some pieces that are equally coruscating in the most unexpected small business shops on Amazon. One in particular was an Indian family owned wedding jewellery brand I have fallen in love with. They have an endless selection of faux pearls that are larger and more wearable than my Hawaiian-dived-and-designed real pearls.
In an interview with Alexa Chung, there was a lady of a certain age who gave her a piece of advice: opt for jewellery to bring the light to your face. Those words were law I have been been abiding by for the past several years, because this was a little shard of insider information I personally observed when purchasing my first two dollar pair of hoop earrings at Forever 21 when I was a teenager. Jewellery brings a world of difference to your feminine appearance when such delicate fulgurations are draped at your jaw.
This is why I tend to learn towards larger pieces of bijouterie when dressing a simple outfit. I do not sport a twenty thousand dollar timepiece, statement sequin dress, or any aggressive silhouette. Keeping my ensemble simple to highlight my figure, attitude, and naturally falling fibres are my priority. Looking attractive, to me, never meant being on trend or following the latest seasonal fashion. It is simply bringing attention to the details that make you smile. Or others smile.

Costume jewellery is the most fun to me, because there are those simple, timeless piece you can pass down from generation to generation. Then, every now and again, you have the bright pops of lipstick or glimmering eyeshadow to mix up your wardrobe. Some pieces may look cheaper than others, but the point is to understand the etiquette of dressing appropriately. Don the precious stones and especially lucent ornaments after six in the evening. Their effulgence is meant to be subtly appreciated when the sun goes down and typically blinds people in the daytime. The same goes for sequins and anything that shines.

Pearls and fine metals are the only types of lambent pieces that can be worn from day to night. Stick to this guideline, and you can avoid being called ‘gauche’, or ‘à la poubelle’. Some bloggers and individuals in general say faux pearls are as described previously, however I think they are pure fun! I have a small collection of Chanel pearl necklaces that people simply cannot tell the difference. It is rare I find someone with a good eye or a certified gemologist from Tiffany. If someone has impeccable manners and etiquette, they know to not say anything to begin such controversial dialogue.

Besides, my Amazon faux pearls are not anything particularly stand out when it comes to the quality, and that is deliberately why I acquired them. When I was living in the Hollywood Hills, I was consistently in the neighbouring Beverly Hills visiting Mr. Dixon’s offices for lunches and saying hello. Crime had skyrocketed where I was being verbally abused, chased, and followed during the day by homeless drug addicts at my routine checkpoints at the local gas station, bank, and grocery store.
If anything – this sounds dramatic to point out – Amazon jewellery was the one thing that made me feel safe. This is why I moved along with over one million other California residents. Now living in a much older part of the United States, Kentucky is the 17th state, I feel the old money style here much more. It really does feel like I am living in my husband’s incumbent land: England. Sure, my gems are not something handed down from ten generations ago, but I at least look the part from a distance. Here, people tend to mind their own business rather than stare one down in Los Angeles, and from a distance is just fine. I actually like this more. There are many ways to feel safe.
The best part about costume jewellery is marking almost everyday as an occasion. You feel more dressed up even when wearing a silhouette that is tired. Rejigging and rejuvenating the old items in your closet step up styling when the season is unforgiving and forces you to wear certain pieces over and over. I love saving money, and have no problem sharing that on this blog or my YouTube channel. I get comments all the time that I spend a lot on certain things and not others. It never bothers me, because it is my money, time, and efforts others cannot dictate over me. I prefer to spend more money on higher priority milestones on my list and purchasing property that I can hand down. Jewellery is a bit lower on the list, and I actually am saving for quite the Ivy Getty-inspired collection.
Even if I did accumulate an assemblage of regalia, I would not share this on the internet haha. By the time I did, I would have some sort of security system with armed guards in place before touching on the subject briefly. I will probably be eighty years old or so by the time I do and can share it with my granddaughter(s) if I broach the topic. Outside of that, others would not understand the lengths one goes through to obtain ethically, thought out, and designed jewellery, because there are so many other pleasant things to worry about in the lives of others. I would be inexhaustibly criticised for owning so much without them knowing my charitable works. This is all hypothetical haha. Yet pragmatic considering how unhappy trolls on the internet seek to be.

That is neither here nor there thus far, and for the time being, I will simply enjoy these works of art while I have them and while they last. I feel so much more at ease when wearing something I am comfortable with affording. As these are some of the last pieces of costume gemstones I will own, I will always treasure them as much as I do with my engagement diamonds. They will always have a place in my heart, which is why I bought them in the first place.
