I think it is wrong to go outside and not have some basic understanding of how the world works. Listening to Mahler every morning makes me go outside and listen to every detail of the birds, wind, and cars passing. He was known to paint the picture of the universe with his symphonies of over 1,000 musicians. You will definitely hear every type of odd instrument, colour of your surroundings, and want more. Or at least open up that part of your brain that makes you wonder.
How do you use a bridge not understanding its basis of construction and guidelines for how structures are formed? How do you listen to music without grasping some music theory and discovering timbre? What makes you think not comprehending fundamental subjects will not have any consequences? You will not know until you learn!
Education is not something you finish. Graduating is only genesis. Going to the local book readings, lectures, and analog performances were a goal of mine with Mr. Dixon, because we did not want to ingest low quality content. I love action movies, but instead of going to the movie theatre, we rather go to a higher quality production that takes more time and effort to put together live. This is something we have been sticking to outside watching streaming services, and helps us connect with our community better.
This also helps me build my network for my career here even better. My other career, that is. Real estate investing! It is so much fun, but having an ear in the community by keeping touch with my encircling neighbourhood is a great start. There are so many beautiful buildings here, and I can immediately see the difference in age Kentucky has in comparison to the nouveau California. Both are abundant in farm land, but one kept the heritage of its Founding Fathers, having been the seventeeth state.
American Colonial has undertones of Roman Architecture, Gibbs’ treatise, and leans more toward function as opposed to form. I learnt all of it from this Classicist course that is free, but you can also sign up to their website to get a certificate. Calder Loth is the professor and O.G. Architecture from Virginia divulging all the prime pinciples in this free course of simply four videos. It went by so quickly, the learning was so fun, easy, and I wish there were more. I look for more of his work and saved all the books he mentioned.
I will never call myself an expert in architecture at all. It is only the opening notes scratching the surface on the subject for me. It is funny, but not that surprising that a lot of ideas I picked up in art gave me a bit of inherent conceptualisation. Every time Mr. Dixon and I go outside for a walk, I name as many details of a house I can see possible at the top of my memory. It makes me realise I need to go back and study my notes again haha. I have the base ideas, but not all the bells and whistles so far.
Have you ever went to someone’s home or strolled through a cul-de-sac to find some not so attractive architectural design? It could be an individual’s furniture that looks tacky, or the style of a home that looks cold and miserable. The reason is because they lack the rudimentary assimilation of basic architecture. A lot of it is also because people have bad taste. But that all comes down to the originating reason.
Once you throw out the history of something and do not have a chief notion of its heritage, your direction is all wrong. For example, drawing a face is harder than it looks. You have to know the general space between someone’s eyes, proportions of figure, and technique for creating hard and soft lines. My husband points at a certain gaudy style that will probably hurt your eyes known as ‘footballer’s wives’ furniture. It is always something painted gold, looks like it was modelled after Versailles, but not. This is what they think rich people have, when the truth is rich people inherit 300 year old pieces that have lasted 5ever, because their great-great someone was rich. Merely missed the mark.
Form and function work symbiotically, and once you give up the other you are screwing yourself haha. I am not here saying, I understanding now, so I am going to go build another Acropolis hahaha. I want to be able to appreciate things better, and not take the world around me for granted. Now, when I show or build a property, it has so many selling points that make people’s heads open up that there is something great in even the smallest details they might have overlooked.
